Known for exceptionally clean, mountain-fed water and incredible mountain views, Lake James is the uppermost lake on the Catawba River System and one of the most picturesque lakes in North Carolina.  Situated in the eastern foothills of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake James is a 6,812-acre recreational lake with over 150 miles of shoreline.  Lake James is conveniently located 45 minutes from Asheville and less than 2 hours from Charlotte.  Created with three man-made dams by Duke Power in 1916, the lake still provides hydroelectric power to the region.

Lake James is a perfect weekend or day trip destination.  Launch your own boat at the public ramps or rent a boat from one of the four marinas.  Lake James State Park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy swimming, fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and just about any other outdoor activities you can think of!

After a day on the lake, experience a pint of local beer at Fonta Flora Brewery at Whippoorwill Farm or Mica Town Brewing both located in Nebo.  Take in views of Lakes James, Linville Gorge, and Shortoff Mountain while playing a round of golf at the Marion Lake Club golf course.  For lunch or dinner, try Slices Bistro at the Marion Lake Club or dine right on the water at Bear Creek Marina & Grill.  There is something for everyone at Lake James!
